bp is determined to achieve net zero by 2050 or sooner – and hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a key part of this plan. Using the elements of success, we’re on a mission to decarbonise the world and create a better future for us all.
Hydrogen
We’re focussing on areas where hydrogen will make the biggest impact – areas where switching to electricity is trickier and we can make a meaningful impact in a way no one else can.
As part of our pivot from an international oil company to an integrated energy company, we’re using hydrogen to impact huge projects that better the world. It’s an exciting time to be involved in sustainability at bp, and we can’t wait to see the work our team does to better the world in action.
CCS
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is at the heart of our plans to deliver low carbon electricity and energy, and to contribute to our net zero ambition. Through combining low carbon energy with CO2 storage as a service, we believe CCS can play a key role to help hard to abate industries decarbonize and transition.
Here’s where we’re already involved:
H2 Teesside
In North-East England we’re working on a 1 gigawatt (GW) blue hydrogen project that will be ready to launch in 2027. This large-scale facility is expected to help lead a low carbon transformation, supporting jobs as well as the regeneration and revitalization of the surrounding area.
Lingen Green Hydrogen
At our Lingen refinery in Germany, we’re working with Ørsted to develop a 60MW green hydrogen facility, starting up in 2024. This refinery offers the opportunity to accelerate significant emissions reduction, helping us meet the energy demands of a decarbonising world.
H-vision
Throughout the Netherlands, we’ve partnered with Shell, Exxon, Air Liquide and Vopak to develop 1500 megawatts (MW) of green hydrogen. For comparison: 1MW can power between 500 and 900 homes for a whole year. We’re kicking off a new hydrogen economy here, and providing an opportunity to develop into a major hub with significant contributions to climate objectives.
Castellón
In Spain, we’ve teamed up with Iberdrola in our Castellón refinery to develop 25MW of green hydrogen, phased up to 200MW. By the end of the project, we’ll be the largest green hydrogen project in the refining sector in Spain.
H2-Fifty
In Rotterdam, in partnership with HyCC, we’re aiming to develop 250MW, which will begin in 2026. H2-Fifty is a cornerstone of the hydrogen vision in the port of Rotterdam and is an exciting new important step in bp’s sustainability journey.
Get-H2
At our Gelsenkirchen refinery, we’ve partnered with Evonik, OGE, RWE and Nowega to develop 100MW of hydrogen, to be of use by 2024. This contributes to Germany’s nationwide hydrogen infrastructure and its goal of becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2050.
Geraldton
In Australia we’re working with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to develop 1.5GW of hydrogen.
We are also getting ready to start a variety of exciting projects in USA, Middle East and Asia Pacific, which are all working towards net zero by 2050 or sooner.
